Ways we reach out to our extended family, our community.
Recognizing that education is a determining factor to a child’s future success, Amigos For Kids, in cooperation with the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department, Mater Academy East, and other cultural/arts related sponsors, in 2004, began administering an after-school program at José Martí Park in East Little Havana. This public/private partnership is designed to help inner city children, providing scholastic assistance, as well as allowing children to attend numerous sports, arts and enrichment activities. Enrollment began with 60 children and currently 150 children are enrolled.
Funded by The Children’s Trust, this series of workshops offers two structured criteria for adults and children:
The goals of parenting education are to strengthen families by providing relevant, effective education and support and to encourage an optimal environment for the healthy growth and development of parents and children.
Amigos offers two options described below that allow flexibility in meeting the specific parenting needs of the families. The lessons are a versatile means of educating families in the community on the philosophy and skills of Nurturing Parenting, a proven evidenced based parenting program.
The Community Based Education
The Community Based Education in Nurturing Parenting is a series of ten (10) independent weekly sessions that are include 60 to 90 minute lessons designed for parents with children of different age groups.
The ABCs for Parents & Their Children 5 to 8 Years
The ABCs for Parents & Their Children 5 to 8 Years. It is a seven (7) session group-based program. Parents and children meet in separate groups for two hours, once weekly, for seven consecutive weeks. Parents learn about Nurturing Parenting skills and ways to encourage their children’s success through good communication and life skills. Children learn comparable skills at age-appropriate levels through puppets, role-play, music, art activities and leader-led discussions.
All services may be provided in English or Spanish based on enrollment demographics.
“Nurturing Families” consists of sessions geared towards improving the bond between parent and child by enhancing feelings of self-worth and through empathy awareness teachings. Internationally recognized curriculums and used throughout the nation created by Stephen J. Bavolek, Ph.D. It’s a proven program for parents, their children, co-workers and domestic partners designed to empower participants and help them become more nurturing individuals.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Amigos coordinates activities during that month through South Florida. Since April 2004, Amigos has spearheaded efforts in cooperation with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, the mayors of the City of Miami, Coral Gables and Miami-Dade County and other local community leaders and organizations to provide an informative series of events. Its purpose is to create awareness about child abuse through education and community involvement and promote positive parenting as it relates to the issues of child abuse. Printed materials are available for both parents and children in three different languages: English, Spanish and Creole.
Every year, Amigos hosts fairs in several locations throughout South Florida. The Family Fair Day is filled with activities for the family in the inner cities of Miami-Dade County. Parents attend educational seminars that guide, educate and equip adults with information and resources to promote awareness and prevent child abuse and neglect. These events have been held annually since 1994.
Amigos provides book bags and school supplies to more than 1,500 children who would otherwise lack school supplies on their first day of school.
This unique and rewarding event, which began in 1991, makes the holidays brighter for thousands of needy children every year. Our effort is designed to fulfill each child’s specific wishes from his/her very own wish list. Children submit wish lists, and gifts are purchased to fulfill at least two of their specific requests. This is one of the most respected holiday giving drives in South Florida.
This is Amigos’ signature annual fundraising event. Domino Night is an unforgettable evening with over 2,000 guests who attend to play dominos with celebrities, dance to live music, enjoy bite-size culinary delights by local restaurants and chefs and bid on silent auction items. All proceeds from this event funds the programs and services Amigos For Kids provides throughout the year.
