Parenting program

Strengthen Families

The parenting program is a best practice curriculum that strengthens the family infrastructure and helps prevent child abuse and neglect.

The program focuses on improving parent knowledge and application of effective parenting practices as well as improving parent-child relationships.

Parents and their children participate in weekly, concurrent sessions and then come together for a family dinner to practice what was learned.

A community-based, bilingual, and culturally appropriate program for parents/caregivers and children birth to eleven years old with the ultimate goal of preventing child abuse and neglect while simultaneously strengthening families. Parents learn ways to encourage their children’s success through communication, role-playing, and life skills, while children learn comparable skills at age-appropriate levels. Both parenting and child sessions are given during community education seminars and field trips. Family events and community fairs are also held.

The program is administered year-round in English and Spanish and serves Miami Dade County with emphasis on the Hispanic/Latino population and serves nearly 300 families per year.

Services are provided at locations with high-risk community factors of crime, poverty and high unemployment rates.

Educate Communities

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and for over 30 years, Amigos For Kids has been working to prevent child abuse and neglect through programs that empower children, strengthen families, and educate communities.

Each year, thousands of children are abused, neglected, and exploited.  We move our mission forward by creating awareness and educating communities.

We believe awareness fuels change. That’s why we are making the issue of child abuse recognized and discussed through various activities taking place in April.

"There's NO Excuse for Child Abuse!" - Art Contest

We encourage kids in our community to get creative and submit drawings, paintings, photography, and graphic design depicting the theme "There's NO Excuse For Child Abuse." Winners receive prizes and have their work displayed in a local art gallery.

Rock Your Socks to End Child Abuse

Schools in our community help spread the word on child abuse prevention by participating in our Rock Your Socks school fundraiser.

Amigos Walk for Great Childhoods

Students of our afterschool program create class banners depicting the theme "There's NO Excuse For Child Abuse" and walk in our community to spread the message that it takes everyone to support great childhoods.

Monique Burr Foundation's Child Safety Matters Lessons

Children in our programs engage in lessons from the Child Safety Matters curriculum, which are aimed at promoting safety. This evidence-based and evidence-informed program helps educate and protect children from all types of bullying, abuse, and victimization.

Award-winning campaigns like Broken Crayons

A multi-platform campaign which showcases the work from renowned child protection expert, Dr. Elspeth McInnes, shows unsuspecting art goers coming to the startling realization that children hide troubling truths in their classroom drawings.

Fulfill Holiday Wishes

In spite of all of the challenges we faced in recent times, we are reminded daily of the struggles of others in our community who are less fortunate than us. Families who were already struggling to make ends meet are now facing even more hardship. Holiday gifts are a luxury many families that are barely getting by cannot afford. That is why every year we mobilize our Amigos in support of our Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

The Amigos For Kids Holiday Toy Drive, with the help of volunteers and corporate sponsors, collects and delivers special holiday wishes to under-resourced children from various community programs, agencies, and outreach programs throughout South Florida.

The Blue Backpack project

Help Kids Start School Right

For three decades, Amigos For Kids has sent thousands of needy children back to school with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. Through The Blue Backpack Project, we reach low-income families throughout the Miami-Dade County through a myriad of partnerships with schools, community organizations and government agencies.

The Blue Backpack Project is one of the longest running free school supply initiatives in our community and dramatically reduces the financial burden on parents, as well as teachers, who often reach into their own pockets to pay for school supplies for their students.

With so many children in our community who come from families that can’t afford to buy even basic school supplies, your support will make a significant difference in the life of a child!
